Horses are able to sleep both lying down and standing up. They are able to enter light sleep and dose while standing. Lying down makes a horse or any animal more vulnerable to predators. Horses are able to sleep standing up because a "stay apparatus" in their legs allows them to doze and to relax their without collapsing and falling.
